CT // Four & Twenty

Hi all,

It was Mother’s Day recently and I wanted to take my mom out for an early breakfast as a treat. So I decided on Four and Twenty cafè in Chelsea, Cape Town.

Four and Twenty is a gem in this part of town. Their baked offerings are always presented with such special touches and styled beautifully; their interior is airy, well-lit and decorated with pretty girly touches and their menu is inventive yet simple.

It was pretty early when we arrived, so we needed some coffee (they serve Bean There, which is always good) and the best freshly squeezed orange juice I have had in a while. I had the Hearty Baked eggs (sweet potato and caramelised onion hash, smoor and eggs baked in a ramekin, R90), which was really good, I added chorizo (duh), which made it even better! The eggs were a tad overdone and it could have been served much warmer, but it was super tasty, and the chorizo was went really well with it. My mom had the Eggs Be-lean (poached eggs on an aubergine/truffle/mushroom rosti with salmon and yoghurt hollandaise and confit baby tomatoes, R87), which was incredible. That truffle in the rosti was a surefire winner. Whew, we were happy and had full bellies. We enjoyed some tea and chatting and then went to get our nails done (as one does on Mother’s Day). It was a great morning and my mom loved it there!

The thing about Four and Twenty is that it is pretty much always busy. Which is great for the vibe that creates, but bad if you want a table. They generally don’t take bookings for parties fewer that 6 people, so if you want a leisurely coffee for 2 on a Saturday morning, you may be disappointed. There was literally a queue at the door before they opened on Mother’s Day! The staff was really friendly and as attentive as they could have been with the full house they had to serve.

This sweet spot is definitely worth a visit, and when you go, please try some of the delicious-looking baked goods on offer and let us know what you had – I was about to try the gluten-free Ricotta and almond hearts, but was way too full! I wish there were a few more GF options to choose from, but alas.

Whatever you did on Mother’s Day, I hope you all had some quality time with your leading lady.
